Cell Phones
for Soldiers
The seven area AAA Northwest Ohio offices are
drop-off sites for Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. We
are asking northwest Ohio residents to help troops
call home by donating gently-used cellular phones.
With ongoing deployments to combat areas and
elsewhere, as many as 369,000 troops are serving in
the U.S. military overseas. By donating gently-used
cellular phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, local
residents can provide troops with that precious
connection to loved ones back home.
“With everything our troops sacrifice for our
country and our freedom, we can’t help but wish
we could do something to repay them,” said April
Cochran, AAA Northwest Ohio’s Vice President of
Marketing and Public Affairs.
“Although modest when
compared to their service,
we are proud to take part in
the effort to make our troops’
deployment a little more
accommodating.”
Siblings Robbie and Brittany
Bergquist founded Cell Phones
for Soldiers at the ages of 12 and 13. The charity
has since provided more than 168 million minutes
of free talk time to service men and women
stationed around the world. Funds raised from the
recycling of cellular phones are used to purchase
pre-paid international calling cards. To date, they
have recycled more than 10.5 million cell phones,
reducing the impact on landfills. On average, Cell
Phones for Soldiers distributes over 12,000 calling
cards each week to bases around the world, care
package programs, deployment ceremonies and
VA hospitals.
“Each year we have been humbled by the
amount of people and organizations, like AAA
Northwest Ohio, that take the initiative to support
our troops,” said co-founder Brittany Bergquist.

Safety Patrol Scholarship
In order to recognize the time and
dedication involved in serving as a
school safety patroller, AAA Northwest
Ohio is awarding two $1,000 college
scholarships in 2013. AAA recognizes
“leaders in the making” – students who
show promise, because of the important lessons in
community service and responsibility they learned as a
safety patroller.
Students who previously served as safety patrollers
will be evaluated based on academic standing,
participation in the community, extracurricular
activities and letters of recommendation. This
scholarship will award students for continuing their
service to the community following their time as a
safety patroller.
Applications are available in the high school guidance
to
the school office by March 22, 2013. Each school will
then forward qualified applications to AAA Northwest
Ohio no later than April 1st. Winning recipients will be
contacted in May.
“We have also watched the communication gap
between our armed forces and their loved ones
continue to grow as more troops
are deployed for their third or
fourth tour overseas.”
Donated phones are sent to
Michigan-based ReCellular for
recycling. For every donated
phone valued at just $5, Cell
Phones for Soldiers is able to
provide two and a half hours of
free talk time to deployed troops.
Northwest Ohio
residents can donate
their phones to the
cause at any AAA
Northwest Ohio
branch office or Car
Care Plus facility.
